hi jan,
when she was picked up on charing cross rd. dec.1898 by police and taken from her mother , who was said to be drunk and begging, she was taken to st. james workhouse the night nurse said she was in a pitiable state. then custody was given to nspcc, rev. benjamin waugh. she then went to stephney causeway receiving house, then to girls village ilford essex.

she was released from the workhouse, to police, the same day her mother went to court for the neglect charge. was it possible she may have testified against her mother?

thanks for your prompt response. i have hit a brick wall with finding her mother, who also had the same name as my gran, eliza preston. what makes it even harder is that the mother used aliases. i thought maybe if ther was a record of the vac. there might be some clue to the mother.
