Hello Mary,
Thanks for your replies to both questions.
My grandfather was brought up by a vicar ( so the story goes)
I know his father disappeared. Whether he died, or left I do not know.
So he was born in 1880 (Spitalfields). Appears on the 1881 census with both
parents.(Spitalfields).
Joins the army in 1898, gives his mother as next of kin, in Byfleet, Surrey.
But he was born in Spitalfields, and the family are still there in 1891
census. But without Dennis and Elizabeth Sullivan.
So could he have gone to the workhouse with is mother, or was he in a church
run home?? Who knows.
thanks for reply,
Eileen
