Thank you Mary and Colin for your insights, they are much appreciated.
Here is a little bit more information (not that I have much!)
-------------------------------------------

What I do (sort of) know. John had at least one brother, Andrew (and I
suspect a couple of sisters because of nieces and nephews named in his
will). They were supposedly from and area of Alsace-Lorraine. John, as I
mentioned, ended up in England. Andrew went to Brooklyn, New York. In US
census records I have found sometimes nativity is listed as French,
sometimes German which leads me to believe they lived near the boarder.
Andrew's son's obituary lists birthplace of S---------, France
(approximately 7-10 letters).

John married Sophia _______ and they adopted a daughter, Sophia Trouvee
Clifford. After John's death Sophia married Henry Robert Lewis, Esq.

Rumor has it that John was the tailor to the queen's beau ... or maybe
people mixed this up .... I've seen references to a John Stulz being the
tailor to Beau Brummell. In any event, it appears that John was successful
at tailoring and left a legacy to the "unknown" almshouse and the other
institutions I mentioned in my first query.

the following is part of John's will:
