Alsace-Lorraine is an area which changed hands between France and Germany
many times over the years, (now both are inFrance) so it may well appear as
France then Germany or vice versa in the historic records. Strasbourg is in
the Alsace area of France, very close to the current border - possibility?
Forty thousand pounds was a HUGE sum of money to leave in 1840's. He was a
wealthy man and I would be surprised if you do not find more on him in some
of the records of London citizens. The Societyof Genealogists in London have
various indexes to London citizens which may well be worth consulting.
