Hi Judy, Please forgive me if I'm stating the blindingly obvious but there
is a substantial entry on Hartley Wintney workhouse, including location and
photos, at
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.htm
Hope this is of interest.

I had kept a digest from Aug 05 because it mentions Hartley Wintney, which I
know quite well. When I was clearing out the folder I actually read the
contribution from Mary.
It is perhaps worth pointing out that Hartley Wintney is on a main road to
London, and presumably the same was true a century ago. So the idea that the
person sought was en route would be supported by that. It is also pretty
near the big army bases and towns - Aldershot, Camberley etc. The person
discussed was well beyond service age (George Nash, aged 70) but there might
be family reasons for him being in the area, especially during wartime.
There is a bistro there now called the Pourhouse, which I thought was a
fairly sick pun, given that the diet 'enjoyed' by inmates - wouldnt have
included caesar salad and pancotta, that's for sure. But a discussion on
this list sometime ago suggested that the restaurant is in a different
location. The building tho, is Victorian or perhaps Edwardian.
I would love to know where the HW workhouse actually was, as I have still to
work that one out.
