Hello everybody,
I wonder if there is anybody on this list who can offer any thoughts to help
with my search? My grandmother was born in 1876 in London and I have been
able to trace a great deal of information about her parents and
grandparents. The family stayed in a close area around West London for
several generations and were always living in areas of very poor lifestyles
and housing. I have all the census records except for 1891 from which my
grandmother, most of her siblings and her young widowed mother are missing.
I have found that a 9 year old sister was resident in Nazareth House in
Fulham in 1891 and that the family were back in their old home area again by
1901, including the Nazareth House 'child' and with the addition of one more
son who was born well after the death of the father and bears the family
surname. To date I can find no birth certificate for this son who appears
to be illegitimate. The whole scenario leads me to suspect that the widow,
and possibly others in the family, had to enter a workhouse; perhaps that
son was born in one?
Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.
