Connie

You will find some info on the Catholic organizations here

http://ist.uwaterloo.ca/~marj/genealogy/children/Organizations/catholic.html

or in my book

Young Immigrants to Canada: 1869-1939.

Manning was a very interesting man and tried to get the Catholic children
out of the workhouse and into Catholic institutions. He was instrumental in
establishing many Catholic institutions.

St. Vincent's Home was located in Brook Green Lane, Hammersmith and was
opened Dec 1859 (only room for 20 boys). It was originally run on a
patronage system - 4 shillings a week was paid by a sponsor to send a boy
there.

The home became too small and was given over to the care of girls while St
Vincent's moved to larger quarters. In 1876 Rev. Lord Archibald Douglas was
in charge of the home now on Harrow Road. About 1886 Father Douglas Hope
took charge of the home.

You will find info on Cardinal Manning online at
