Thank you for providing this information, the links and suggestions look promising. My great grandfather was Charles Hunt and he fought in the Crimean war. He left England on his own in 1856 and sailed aboard the ship Thornton to New York (Castle Garden) and made his way to Ontario, Canada, settled on land and married and raised a family here. His parents were John and Ann. I only know this from his marriage certificate where he states as much. He used to say he was born in the Cheviot Hills and he was an orphan. This information I have from older relatives and by word of mouth only, no concrete evidence on the data. I had all my great grandfathers records from his stint in the Crimean War researched at the KEW in London. Sadly, there was no mention of where he was born or of his parents. Charles would not be a home child. The two references to a John and Ann Hunt look promising! I WILL follow up on all your suggestions and I am very grateful for your reply. Thank you again for taking the time and effort to contact me. Here's a link to my personal website: http://home.cogeco.ca/~ihunt/ if anyone cares to have a look at what I've managed to assemble thus far. It's a rather cumbersome website, but one I made on my own. It takes a while to load, so be patient. Any other suggestions and/or comments are most welcome. Thanks again.
