Hi

Thanks for your help Peter. Do you know the exact location of Chell House?
I would love to find out more about it. I have lots of questions such as

1. Would it have had the same stigma attached to it?
2. Would the children be taken back to the Workhouse for periodic visits to
their parents?
3. My grandmother couldn't read or write because she had to look after
younger children. Wouldn't she have been required to attend school in 1911?

Do you know of any publication that could give me more information on
'Scattered Homes', or anything about Chell House, in particular. I have
read the information on the Website.

Regards

Lynn

Hi

My Grandmother, Jane Richardson, was sent to Burslem and Wolstanton
Workhouse in 1911 at the age of 11 with her parents, John and Jane. On
admittance, she was sent to Chell House, which was part of, though not
necessarily located with, Burslem Workhouse. There appears to be no records
in existence for Chell House.

Can anyone tell me whether, in such instances, Chell House would have
accommodated boys and girls? If yes, would they have been segregated at
this period?

Regards

Lynn Johnson

Dear Lynn,

by 1911, Wolstanton and Burslem union was making use of what were
broadly known as "scattered homes" where pauper were housed in premises
away from the main workhouse, often in "family" groups of 15 or 20 under
the care of a house mother. Chell House, which stood in Great Chell, may
well have been used for this purpose. Boys and girls would have been
housed separately, although in a large property, it could have been
divided up to accomplish this.

All best wishes,
Peter
