Anita,
As a response to the comment on the name Charlap, I am researching my
grandmother`s surname (englishized/americanized to) Chaloff (passenger list
listings were Chalef & Chalif depending who was hearing and transcribing
from the cyrillic pronunciation), which is a related name to Charlap
according to Prof Arthur Menton of the Charlap/Yahya Family
org.( ).
Galina apparently transliterated it to Charlov, the ch being treated as the
ch in the word "chance", but according to my new Odessa friends the ch in
Odessa is pronounced more like a hard "H".
Perhaps this will be helpful.
Paul Friedman, researching: Chaloff/Chalov etc., Youchnov(now)/Yuchnov,
Rubenshick/Rubenstein, and Levy
