Hi Linda. You're right according to my records. I wrote a summary of the
Gregg family from Ann to John Gregg and got "booted" by AOL before I could
send it....something they're getting too fond of doing when they get too much
traffic! Anyway, skipping several generations back from Ann to about 1576
(I'm at my son's and don't have my notebooks).....John Gregg, who was
descended from the McGregor Clan (naturally) was transferred to the
"Plantations" of Northern Ireland from Scotland after the McGregors were
"proscribed"-as I remember the term anyway. That meant that the Clan could
gather in no more than 2 or 3 to a group, the men couldn't carry a dirk or
sharp knife, only one to eat with, they couldn't use the McGregor name; and
the women were to be "branded on the face with a key". John regained the
pleasure of the King by agreeing to assist in transport and settle some of
the Northern Scots/Irish to the south. According to legend, he was given a
silver handled cane to carry with him to the "Colonies" in North America and
he immigrated here and started our Gregg line. I could check my records and
be a lot more specific with you when I get home...if you like. Some
researchers have traced Ann's lineage pretty far. What I've compared seems
pretty consistent, however you know how research goes, one person simply
repeats anothers findings. (This from someone who made a serious error on
the internet the other day!) My face is still red. Keep in touch if you're
interested in pursuing this. Have you seen the Hollingsworth Register
materials?
