Thank you Kathie, Barbaranne and Fraser.
What peaked my curiosity about the earlier groups is the following exerpt
from Adolphustown 1784-1984, by Katherine J, Lamont:
"Meanwhile the United Empire Loyalist Society decided to put up a monument
instead. On March 9th [1884] the United Empire Loyalist Adolphustown
Celebration Committee was established and took charge of preparations of the
festivities."
The "instead" refers to the previous paragraph which reads:
"The cornerstone of the St. Albans United Empire Loyalist Memorial Church
was laid on June 17th, 1884 by Sir John Beverly Robinson,
Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario."
It is interesting to note that the Centennial Committee desparately wanted
Prime Minister Macdonald to attend the festivities in June 1884.
Unfortunately the local Member of Parliament of the day was Liberal David W.
Allison, on whose farm the UEL Monument was erected and who had forced
Macdonald to give up the Lennox riding after the election of 1882.
Regards,
Brandt
PS - D.W. Allison's house is now the main building of the United Empire
Loyalist Heritage Centre. The 1884 monument is in the UEL Memorial Cemetery
which is part of the 72-acres that make up the site.
