Subject: [UPP-CAN] KLUGH to KLUEY- Germany to Canada 1850s?
Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 21:31:18 -0800
Greetings,
Just finally found my gg-grandfather, Joseph, and his siblings,
plus his mom on the 1881 census for Morrison Twp., Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
last evening.
They are listed as:
KLUGH, Minnie; 50 yrs; Born in Germany; Lutheran; German descent
KLUGH, Joseph; 24 yrs; Born in ON; Lutheran; German descent; Labourer
KLUGH, William; 23 yrs; Born in ON; Lutheran; German descent; Farm Labourer
KLUGH, Mary; 20 yrs; Born in ON; Lutheran; German Descent
KLUGH, Samuel; 19 yrs; Born in ON; Lutheran; German descent; Farm Labourer
KLUGH, David; 17 yrs; Born in ON; Lutheran; German descent
Now, I'm a 'KLUEY' and as far as I can figure, at some point Joseph
changed his name, OR named his two sons and
daughter (William N. b. 1891 - d.Feb. 1931, Stanley Joseph b.Jul 1893 -
d.Feb. 1960, and Mary b.1895 - d. unknown date) with the last name of
KLUEY. BTW... they were all born in Morrison Twp., Muskoka, ON.
I don't know why the name was changed, yet. If you are connected via
KLUGH or KLUEY, or any of these names sound familiar please let me know.
I'm desperate to find out who these German immigrants were, who the
missing husband was and what the mother's full name was. The story goes
that Joseph was born on the boat coming to Canada. I can't prove this, but
even if this is a half truth, that means they came to Canada sometime from
1856-1858 from my guesswork at birthdays and all.
The other story goes, which seems to follow the evidence of what is seen
in the Census, that Minnie KLUGH's husband, after they had the last child,
ran off and never came back. Minnie wrote back to her family in Germany,
desperate for help and a means to get back to her homeland to her family
because she was alone with five small children, but her letter was returned
to her, unopened. Quite tragic.
Also, for interest sake, Joseph and William married KEETCH sisters,
Susan and Josephine, respectfully (both born in ON I believe).
Hope someone can help me.
Take care,
Melissa KLUEY
