Does anyone know anything of the GEIKIE family?
Sally Sutherland, d/o Thomas Sutherland married Archibald Geikie. He
and his family had gone to Moore with Mr. Sutherland when he returned to
Canada in 1843 from a one year visit to Scotland and England. The
Geikie's bought the farm that was owned by Mr. Little. Mr. Geikie, sr.,
was willing to help his son Archie in furnishing and getting the house
ready. Mr. Bell gave Sally fifty acres of land for her dowry and Archie
was to work the farm.
He was no good as a farmer and his wife was not very strong, and since
he and Mr. Bell were not able to agree he gave up the farm and turned his
attention to the Church. He was ordained a Congregational minister and
was appointed to a charge in Stratford where it is believed that he did
fairly well.
When he had been there about three years his wife died, leaving a baby
girl, Sarah Geikie, only a few hours old. He took his wife's body to
Moore; also the baby. the latter cared for by a nurse. She was buried
beside his mother in the old Congregational Cemetery in Mooretown.
Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
