Hello,

I have posted to a few of these lists before, but
since a few others are new to me & I have additional
research info since my last postings, this will be a
tad long. Hang in there, some of this may be worth
reading.

My father's paternal grandmother Margaret
MCINTOSH was born in Scotland to John MACKINTOSH &
Elizabeth (aka Betsey or Betty) GOLLAN. From the
Petty, Inverness-shire OPRs I found:

1. 1841 April 30
Then contracted John MCINTOSH and Betty GOLLAN
both
at Gollanfield of this parish who after...
proclamation w. married.
(The ... is because I couldn't read that part of
the entry on the microfilm I had.)

2. 1842
Margaret daughter of John MACKINTOSH and Betty
GOLLAN in Broomtown was born 1st and baptised
9th of February. The witnesses were John
MCINTOSH and Robert ROSS both in Gollanfield.

3. 1843
John Gilbert Gollan son of John MCINTOSH and Betty
GOLLAN in Gollanfield was born 13th and baptised
28th of November. Witnesses John GOLLAN Esq of
Gollanfield and Wm. MCINTOSH there.

4. 1845
William son of John MCINTOSH and Betty GOLLAN at
Broomtown was born 1st of May and baptised 5th
of June. Witnesses John GOLLAN Esq of Gollanfield
and Jas FINLAYSON.
(A second entry ends with "James FINLAYSON at
Broomtown." Would anyone know why the same
OPR would have two entries for a birth &
baptism? This happened for John Gilbert,
William,
& Thomas.)

5. 1850
Thomas son of John MCINTOSH and Betty GOLLAN at
Broomtown was born 19th and baptised 26th of
July. Wit. Wm. MCINTOSH and Jas. MCKENZIE
both there.

John & Elizabeth had a fourth son, Duncan, born
in 1848. I did not find an entry for him in the Petty
OPR nor on the Scots Origins web site. I found out
about him from his sister Margaret's obituary, &
Scottish & Canadian censuses.

In 1855 the family settled in Ayr, Waterloo,
Upper Canada, as Ontario was called then. According
to church records, John & Elizabeth became members of
the Knox Church (Presbyterian -- in Ayr) in October,
1855.

1855 was also the year John & Elizabeth's second
daughter, Janet or Jessie, was born. She was born in
Canada. Does anyone know a specific date?

John & Elizabeth's last child, Catherine, was
born in Ayr. Her date of birth was 19 February, 1861.
She was baptised 27, May.

John MCINTOSH died 17, July 1896. He is buried
in the Ayr Cemetery, Ayr, Waterloo, Ontario. (John's
date of death I learned from a bereavement card. I
visited his grave site last May. I have pictures for
anyone who would like them.)

Elizabeth GOLLAN died of pneumonia 13, February,
1901; aged 86 years. She is buried beside her
husband. (Elizabeth's bereavement card listed the
month & day she died. I learned the year when I
received a copy of her death certificate. Since she
is buried with John, the same applies for pictures.)

A kind woman from Scotland sent me the following:

William son 5 born Petty
Duncan son 3 born Petty
Thomas son 8 months born Petty
David GRANT visitor 51 house carpenter
born Boleskine
Andrew MUNRO 25 house carpenter
born Duthil

2.
According to the Census Betsy was born in Dores,
Inverness. I am sure she is the daughter of Gilbert
GOLLAN and Jane MCTAVISH and she was bapt 20 February
1816 at Bochrubin, Dores. Gilbert and Janet had other
children some born in Dores and others in Inverness.
At Ruthven, Dores:
- Duncan bapt 20 Sept 1796
- Janet born 5 Jan 1796
- Katharine born 11 Aug 1798 and bapt 16th
- Ketty bapt 15 Oct 1801

According to the IGI, at Inverness:
- Ann 24 Apr 1804
- Mary 29 Apr 1809
- Jean 3 Mar 1814

In the Dores Churchyard the following:
- Donald GOLLAN resident of this parish died 28
February 1803 and wife Isabella MCBEAN died 20 April
1837. Erected by sons of Angus and John GOLLAN.

- Flat Stone: Gilbert GOLLAN (cousin german to the
late Gilbert GOLLAN Esq. of the Island of St.
Vincent, West Indies, who died 9 August 1841 age
79 years and wife Janet MCTAVISH died......
erected by son John GOLLAN Esq. of Gollanfield
near Fort George.

There is a Gilbert GOLLAN who was bapt 30 August
1763 Dores son of Thomas GOLAN and Catharine
MCKILANDRISH, Bochrubine. Gilbert should be on the
1841 Census for Dores, or even Petty. The MCTAVISHES
were from Stratherrick, the Dores side of Loch Ness.

John MCINTOSH should be the son of William
MCINTOSH given the naming of his sons, and I found the
following in the Petty OPR:
- 15 November 1813 "Then William MCINTOSH Servitor to
James MAN in Glaichtown and Jane BREMNER had a child
baptised called John born the 12th. Wit: John
MCINTOSH and John ROSS, Flemington.

James MAN was a farmer in Balnaglaick, Petty.

There was a Jane BREMNER bapt 27 Dec. 1780
daughter of William BREMNER and Margaret MCBAIN who
married 17 April 1773, Petty. They appear to have had
8 children including Jane (according to the IGI)

In Croy Churchyard:
- W.B. William BREMNER late miller, Milltown of
Connage died 7 February 1818 age 68 years and
wife Margaret MCBEAN who died 28 September 1820
age 68. Nine children interred here.

I haven't confirmed any of this yet. Does anyone
know what month(s) the Scottish census' were taken?
I'm having trouble reconciling the conclusions drawn
above to the 1851 census data for John
MCINTOSH/Elizabeth GOLLAN. According to the 1851
census, John was 37 years old. 1851 - 37 = 1814. If
John was born to Wm. MCINTOSH & Jane BREMNER in 1813,
the 1851 census would have to have been taken before
autumn.

A kind gentleman sent me the following:
1. 1861 Census for North Dumfries township,
County of Waterloo, Ontario

1861 (Enumeration District #7 of N. Dumfries, page 57.
Reel C-1077).
Names 36 - 42 on the page.
John MCINTOSH Farmer born Scotland, Free Church (of
Scotland
age 48
Betty " " " age 46
John " " " age 18
Will " " " age 16
Duncan " " " age 13
Thos " " " age 11
Janet " U.C. " age 6

(U.C. means "Upper Canada," the name for the province
of Ontario before Confederation in 1867.)

2. 1871 Census for North Dumfries Township,
county of Waterloo, Ontario

1871 (Enumeration District 31, Subdistrict C part 2,
page 53. Reel 9942.)
Names 4 - 9 on the page.
MCINTOSH John male age 57 born Scotland C. Presb.
Scotch origin farmer
Elizabeth f 55 born Scotland C. Presb.
Scotch origin
Jane E.J. f 15 born Ontario C. Presb.
Scotch origin
William m 24 born Scotland C. Presb.
Scotch origin
Thomas m 20 born Scotland C. Presb.
Scotch origin carriagemaker
Catherine f 10 born Ontario C. Presb.
Scotch Origin at school

("C. Presb." is thought to mean "Christian
Presbyterian.")

Would anyone know what month(s) the Canadian
census' were taken? I run into the same problem as
above. However, the 1861 census is the only one where
straight subtraction puts John MCINTOSH'S birth in
1813.

As I stated earlier, John MCINTOSH & Elizabeth
GOLLAN's eldest child Margaret is my ancestor.
Margaret's obituary is as follows:

The Little Falls Evening Times, Monday, August 9, 1920

Was a native of Scotland
Mrs. Margaret QUINN passed away at home of daughter
here last night.
Mrs. Margaret QUINN died at midnight last night
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Del ROSE, at 11 1/2
Loomis Street. She had been ill for the past week,
following a stroke of paralysis. Mrs. QUINN's maiden
name was Margaret MCINTOSH. She was born in
Inverness, Scotland, February 1, 1843. When 12 years
of age she came to this country, the family settling
in Canada. She was married to Harry QUINN, who died
three years ago. Much of her life was spent near
Richfield Springs, from which section she came to this
city 20 years ago. Mrs. QUINN was a kind wife and a
devoted mother, who was held in hight esteem by her
many friends for her splendid attributes of character.
Surviving are one son, Henry, of this city; three
daughters, Mrs. Frank GYER and Mrs. William HOLLOW of
Jordanville, and Mrs. Del ROSE of this city; two
brothers, John MCINTOSH of Manitoba and Duncan of
Prescott; and two sisters, Mrs. Kate WATTS of Toronto
and Mrs. George HAMMOND, likewise of that city.
Twenty-seven grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will be held at to p.m. tomorrow from
the ROSE home on Loomis Street. Rev. H.C. Cooper
officiating. The remains will be taken to Richfield
Springs for burial.

(Except for the capitalization of the surnames, I
typed the obituary as it was written. As we can see
from the OPR entry, Margaret was born in 1842, not
1843. Mrs. William HOLLOW should be Mrs. William
HOUSE. to should be two. Harry QUINN's given
name was Henry Charles QUINN. Little Falls is in
Herkimer County, New York.)

Henry Charles QUINN, Margaret MCINTOSH's husband,
filed his Declaration of Intention to Become A Citizen
around 1862. He was granted U.S. Citizenship around
1868. (I don have the exact dates because I have
copies of the documents. However, they're in my files
at home. I'm finding YAHOO MAIL to be convenient
seeing as I'm typing this from my mail id while I'm
visiting my sister. Anyway, the point is, I can
provide exact dates & copies of the documents to
whomever is interested.)

Henry & Margaret do appear on the 1870 U.S.
Census. They & their daughter Elizabeth lived in
Richfield Springs, Otsego County, New York.

Henry & Margaret's children were:

1. Elizabeth Jane b. Jan 10, 1870 d. Mar 29, 1949
m. William Frank GYER

2. Catherine Amelia b. Dec 3, 1872 d. 1880?

3. Margaret Blanche b. Dec 16, 1874 d. Dec 20, 1950
m. William HOUSE

4. Henry Edward b. Apr 3, 1876 d. Jul 27, 1962
m. Dorothy JACKSON Jul 22, 1909
b. Dec 5, 1885 Wilder, Maverick Co., Texas
d. Apr 20, 1958

5. Duncan Gollan b. Apr 9, 1878 d. Jul 5, 1909

6. Miranda Felicia b. Oct 19, 1880 d. Jun 24, 1975
m. Delmont ROSE Nov 17, 1900

QUESTIONS:

1. Would anyone know when & where Margaret MCINTOSH
met Henry Charles QUINN? When they married?

2. Would anyone know what became of Margaret
MCINTOSH's siblings & their descendents?

3. Whould anyone know when, where, & to whom John
MCINTOSH & Elizabeth GOLLAN were born? Who
their families were? How far back can their
families be traced?

4. I'm pretty sure Elizabeth was connected to John
GOLLAN Esq. of Gollanfield, although I'm not sure
how. After all, I don't think just anyone was
allowed to be a witness at a child's
birth/baptism. He was the witness of record for
at least two of John MCINTOSH & Elizabeth GOLLAN's
children. (John Gilbert Gollan & William.)
(Well, I'm thinking the John GOLLAN Esq. is the
one
from the 1841 Petty Census & not the John G.
GOLLAN from the 1851 Petty Census. I think they
are father & son, & it could be either. Anyway,
Elizabeth was somehow connected to them.) I would
be most appreciative if anyone could help me with
this also.

While I was searching the Petty OPR, I noted
other GOLLAN entries:

1. 1823
John Gilbert son to John GOLLAN Esq. of
Gollanfield
and Mrs. Margaret LOGAN at Nairnside of Gibravoch
(Gilravoch? I couldn't make out the spelling)
was born February 4 and baptised 22nd. Witnesses
were W. CAMERON Croy and W. LOGAN (1820)
Margaret daughter to John GOLLAN Esq. of
Gollanfield and Mrs. Margaret LOGAN at Broomtown
was born 25th of August and baptised 25th of
September 1821. Wit. Robert LOGAN Esq. banker
Inverness and Capt. CAMERON of Croy.
(This was one entry. Would anyone know why it
took two/three years to be made? Why it was
one entry instead of two? Where is/was
Nairnside of Gibravoch/Gilravoch?)

2. 1823
Isabella daughter to John GOLLAN Esq. of
Gollanfield and Mrs. Margaret LOGAN at
Broomtown was born 12th March and baptised 10th
April 1823. Wit. Robert LOGAN Esq. Inverness
and W. CAMERON Croy.

3. 1824
Barbara daughter of Jn GOLLAN Esq. of
Gollanfield and Mrs. Margaret LOGAN at Broomtown
was born 29th of September and baptised 28th of
October. The witnesses were Robert LOGAN Esq.
banker Inverness and W. CAMERON Croy.

4. 1827
Janet daughter of Mr. Thomas GILLAN and Mrs.
Beatrice HOYES at Castle Stuart was born 28 May
and baptised 11 June. Witnesses William HOYES
Esq. Trafalgar Place Torres (Dorres? I
couldn't make out the spelling.) and Bailie
Robert SMITH Merchant Inverness.

5. 1829
Beatrice daughter of Mr. Thomas GILLAN and Mrs.
Beatrice HOYES of Castle Stuart was born
December 19th and baptised 15 of January. The
witnesses were Mr. Alexander WHITE merchant
Torres (Dorres?) and Mr. James SIMPSON
schoolmaster Nairn.

5. Does anyone have any info &/or pictures of
Gollanfield. I've obtained bits & pieces of
info from the Petty OPRs, an article from the
Clan Chattan Journal (I can forward the article
to interested parties), & The Scottish Statistical
Account from 18459(?). However, it's pretty
sketchy.
(A gentleman on the MCINTOSH list sent the URL
for the Statistical Account. It is:
http://edina.ac.uk/cgi/StatAcc/AtatAcc.cgi )

Well, that's it. I know it's rather long, sorry
about that. However, I do hope everyone will find a
nugget in there. Hopefully, some will come my way
too. An advance thank you to everyone for all of your
time, help, & consideration.
