In regard to my own family history, these departures were not unusual. Many
of the the families in Upper Canada originated from New York, Michigan etc.
and so had families left in these places. My own family came from Dutchess
County, New York. My family traveled back and forth a lot. And sme did
settle back into these areas and raised families. You will find groupings in
certain areas in Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania . Amy

Subject: [UPP-CAN] The Exodus of Upper Canada-born Children
> In tracing my Eastern Ontario families (now counties Carleton, Grenville,
Dundas, etc), I have discovered many departures from Canada to N.Y.,
Michigan and mid-west America and California in the 1850's and 1860s. Many
were children of immigrants in the 1820-40's and some were married into UEL
families with much deeper roots in the Eastern Ontario areas of Upper Canada
(circa 1783). Certainly, the opening of the Oregon Trail and railways had
an impact, so I sort of can understand the "pull" of the CA gold rush and
free land in the midwest, but what was the "push" in Canada. Is anyone
aware of any history books/research studies on this period, specifically
relating to the children of those born in Upper Canada?
