Phillips is the best for Ontario as a whole. The earliest date I've
found in there is 1843 (in Toronto). I know there was a photographer in
Peterborough in 1847. Reilly says photographs got underway in 1841
(he's American). Pols says 1839 (he's English). Yes, you could have
an Ontario photo from the early 1840's but probably not from 1840.
