I wish I could say that I thought of it, but I really didn't until someone on here suggested it to me! I had a similar situation with one of my O'Meara relatives, with my gr grandfather listing his mothers 1st husbands name and not her maiden name. So I should have caught it, but I didn't.

I do think this is a good possibility that she was married once before to a Kinnar before she married Henry Long. Although, now that I pull the marriage record out, it shows Margaret Kinnar as a spinster and Henry Long as a bachelor when they were married in 1854. I'm not sure how much I can trust the old parish records?

I typically would trust the sons memory of her name too, but son James Long was born in the spring (family bible says July 12th) of 1866. His mother, Margaret Long died April 10, 1866. I suspect the family bibles date of birth is wrong, but have not confirmed it yet with parish records. So it's unlikely that he grew up knowing his mother's maiden name - unless there were relatives in the area that the family kept in touch with.

I guess there is a possibility that Henry Long's wife, Margaret Kinnar, might have died shortly after they were married in 1854 and then maybe Henry remarried a Margaret Lee? Whichever Margaret is buried in the family plot says she died April 10, 1866 at age 37. Also listed besides Henry Long and wife Margaret was their son, Robert who died Jan. 25, 1895 at age 32 (born abt. 1863 or 1864). Henry Long was listed as a widow in the 1871 census.

The childrens ages in the census doesn't give me a real clue in terms of a gap in ages though. Henry Longs children were:

Mary Long b. April 12, 1855 (from the 1901 census) (1861 census say she was age 6; 1871 census says age 15)
Charles Long b. March 16, 1856 (from the 1901 census) (1861 census says age 5; 1871 census says age 13)
David Long b. 1859 (can't find in 1901 census) (1861 census says age 2; 1871 census says age 13; 1881 census says 22)
John Long b. August 14, 1862 (family bible and gr grandfather) (1871 census says age 9; 1881 census says age 20)
Robert Long b. 1864 (family bible) (1871 census says age 4; 1881 census says age 18; family plot says 1863/1864)
James Long b. July 12, 1866 (family bible) (1871 census says age 5; 1881 census says age 15)

Do you see anything obvious that I might be missing? I've been dying to get up to London to look at the parish records myself, but the Anglican Diocese of Huron Archives are only open to the public on Tuesdays from 9-noon and then from 1:30-4:00. I wish I was retired <sigh>.

So I'm stumped and the name confusion hasn't helped much either.

Did it occur to you to look at the possiblity that Kinnar married Long but that Kinnar may have been married before? The marriage would list her married name but her son may have listed her actual maiden name. My g-grandmother was Jeanette Jarvis or so she was known to the family and they had a whole pile of Delong cousins no one really knew the relationship. Jeanette Jarvis was Jeanette Delong and so the confusion. If I were you I would be following the Lee name first. Kinnar may be acturate but you could also waste alot of time and you'll never find her parents. You may also want to go looking in Quebec. The Irish immigrants came through Grosse IIle and the records may give you a lead on the name Lee. It would certainly help if the church record had stated her as a widow or spinster then you would have the answer. I would trust the son's memory of her name first.
