Hi Christina,
This won't be of much help to find Elizabeth's background, but the 1901
census provides a likely explanation for the name "Mary Jane" appearing in
the obit. She was the widowed daughter-in-law of Elizabeth & William.
Elizabeth appears in the 1901 census as A. Elizabeth, so perhaps she was
Anne Elizabeth or Elizabeth Anne.

1901 shows William H. and "A. Elizabeth" in Burleigh with daughter A. Mary,
daughter-in-law Mary Jane and grandchildren B. Stella, Zadrick M., Everett
A., Elma, and Mary M. Next door were J. Walton, wife Isabell, children
Walter C, William, Maud E., Harriett E.. Next door was another HALES family
headed by Charles, who looks of an age to be William's brother.

Since they seem to have stuck pretty much together, you might also look into
the family on the other side of William & Elizabeth. The surname there is
COONES - which might sound a bit like CAIRNS/KEARNS

See
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.html

and you'll find them in Peterborough East, Burleigh & Anstruther, d-2 page
1. When you find their entries, scroll up the page for the link to the
actual census image for more information than is on the index.

William H. HALES shows on the county atlas project, but unfortunately no map
is available for his record showing precisely where he lived. He is listed
as a farmer in Burleigh who settled there in 1852. This might give you a
clue to the date/place of his marriage to Elizabeth. See
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchPeople.php

From the information on the 1881 census, you'll probably be looking for
Methodist church records for the marriage. Hannah is the eldest with them in
1881, born c.1856. If other children were older than her, look for a
marriage a year or two before that year.

The Wesleyan Methodist baptisms register shows that Mary Ann HALES was born
Dec.20, 1867 and baptised in Burleigh on Feb.2, 1868 by the Rev C. A. Jones.
Father William Henry HALES. Mother is listed simply as "E. A." See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/wm-h_5.htm

The Ontario Vital Statistics project has the marriage info of some of
William & Elizabeth's children. (i.e. John Walden in 1880, Margaret in 1885,
Mary Jane 1892). One of them married a CAIRNS, which may be a coincidence,
or a clue! See
http://www.rootsweb.com/~onvsr/

Hope this helps,

Joanne

in William's obit in 1906 as Mary Jane but on all other documents as
Elizabeth so I believe this was a mistake by the writer.

She's been hard to find. Family lore says her parents were CAIRNS and WATSON
but I don't have any more info.
