Apparently a lot of people have problems wading through Canadian land
records, and folks on this list are so generous with their advice that I
thought I'd try asking about my latest stumbling block . . .

My Henry Markle purchased Lots 36 and 37, Concession 2, plus Lots 38 and 39,
Concession 3 in Ancaster Township, all in the very early 1800's. He likely
owned other land in Ancaster Twp. as well. Henry died intestate sometime in
1812; his son Barney became administrator of the estate and the land was
sold. I'm hoping to find some official document giving Barney authorization
to act as administrator and also hoping that this undiscovered document
would list Henry's heirs.

I've searched the Index to Wills of Wentworth Co. and the Index to Probate
Records (although this last film goes back to only 1816) for anything on
Henry or his wife Mary with negative results. Now I'm hoping that some
"Letters of Administration" might be included with land sale records, so I
searched the Land Records Index for Ancaster Twp. and found records of land
sales by Barney Markle and possibly one of his brothers to various people.
The index cited "Book A, Page 32" and "Book E, Page 38." Now where do I go
for the records themselves??

As nearly as I can tell from searching the LDS library catalog, the FHL's
land record films for Ancaster Twp. cover only *extracts* and the earliest
date is 1816. Since it takes up to four months (!) to get films through my
FHL, I'm hoping that someone will steer me in the right direction and help
me avoid waiting months for the wrong film.

What should my next step be? Where can I find Ancaster Twp. land records
prior to 1816? What are "Book A" and "Book E" and where do I get these
films? I would surely appreciate some clarification, advice and direction.
