Faye,

If you have not found your ancestor in all possible census
records, then that is a good place to start.

For example the 1842 census for Ontario gives the
occupation or profession of the head of house.

Regarding English records, there are some available church
and taxation records for Bratton Clovelly. You can consult
them at http://www.familysearch.org/ and then order in what
you want to your local FHC
