The "Brewster Genealogy" has this info about Ezra Brewster which might apply
to other Eastern Township settlers. "Ezra Brewster removed to Colwell's
Manor or Sixth Concession, Canada, in 1807. As he was about to be pressed
into the British Army in the War of 1812, he, with his wife and children,
left Canada for Vermont, in a sleigh, escaping three guards, who were
stationed along the line to Vermont." Ezra eventually settled in Michigan.
Colwell's Manor was very close to the Vermont border and I am guessing that
the Brewsters had moved across the border just looking for more farm land
for their growing family.
After the War of 1812, some Americans moved much further north and were very
early settlers in the Upper Ottawa Valley. The tradition handed down is
that they were loyalist. One of these families named a son "George
Washington" (!?!)
