My Great-Great-Great Grandfather, James Alexander DOW was born in the
province of Quebec (maybe in Montreal? Although it lists his
birthplace
as Quebec, Quebec, Quebec on Familysearch) on 19 April 1920 to Thomas
(?) DOW & Helen/Ellen GRANT. He married Sarah Jane GRANT (daughter of
John & Mary GRANT ?) about 1845 in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada.
They were living in Charlottenburgh Township, Glengarry County at the
time of the 1851 census. James & Jane (Grant) DOW had several
children,
one of which was my great-great grandmother Mary Ann DOW (wife of
Daniel
WOOD) who was born in 1858 in Charlottenburgh Twp., Glengarry.
James Alexander DOW had a sister, Margaret DOW who was born about 1823
(probably in Quebec as well) who married Gilman TAYLOR on 28 May 1839
at
Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario, Canada. Margaret DOW & Gilman TAYLOR are
listed as living in Charlottenburgh Township, Glengarry County in 1881
where they are living with two teenagers (grandchildren maybe?) named
Thomas & Mary Ann McCrea I have no other information on any other
siblings of James and Margaret DOW.
Dow anyone have any information at all on these families?? I have no
idea when, where Thomas DOW (father of James & Margaret) was born or
who
his parents were. His wife was a widow by the time of the 1881 census
and he is not listed on the 1871 census (on the National Archives
website)unless he was living in another city somewhere. The only Dow
family in Canada that I can find online are the ones listed in the
Book
Of Dow who were from the East Coast and the ones who were from Eastern
Quebec.
Any help or hints would be appreciated.
Thanks
Maggie Barron
