Prominent U. P. Pastor Dies in Hospital
In the death of the Rev. James M. MC QUILKIN of Carnegie, which occurred
Monday afternoon, the United Presbyterians of Western Pennsylvania have lost
an outstanding leader and a vigorous crusader of the cause of Christ. He
was well known to many Record-Outlook readers for he had spoken in most of
the pulpits in this district on one occasion or another. He died at 3 o'
clock in the Allegheny General hospital of a gall bladder infection.
Thirty-four years ago he began his pastorate at the Carnegie U. P. church
and built it up from a membership of several hundred to over a thousand.
The Bible class taught by him was in the forefront of S. S. classes in
Allegheny county.
Born in Marissa, Ill., he was a graduate of Cedarville college, Cedarville,
Ohio, and McCormick Theological seminary, Chicago, and held a pastorate for
six years at the First United Presbyterian church of Chicago before coming
to Carnegie in 1908. He was a member of Lafayette lodge No. 652, F & AM,
and Chartiers commandrey, Knights Templar. He had served as a past director
of the Allegheny County Council of Churches and the National Reform
association at the time of his death was a director of the executive
committee of the Christian Council of Churches and the Anti-Saloon League.
The Rev. Dr. MC QUILKIN is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irene SMILEU MC
QUILKIN; a son, Corporal Francis S. MC QUILKIN, with the United States Army
at Camp Hood, Texas; two brothers: Frank and George MC QUILKIN, both of
East St. Louis, Ill., and four sisters: Mrs. Glenn LUKAS and Mrs. James
WYLIE, both of Marissa, and Mrs. James HOOD and Mrs. Elwood MC CLURKIN, both
of Oakdale, Ill.
Funeral services will be held in the Carnegie U. P. church this Thursday
afternoon and Friday afternoon in Marissa, Ill., where he was born. Burial
will be in Marissa.
Friends will be received at his home, 426 Washington avenue, Carnegie.
