Robert J. Hill

FRANKLIN — Robert J. Hill, 74, of 26 Beech St., died Tuesday, Jan. 30,
2001 at Franklin Regional Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Nov. 23, 1926, the son of Harry M.
Hill and Lilly (Muller) Hill. He grew up in Poughkeepsie and was a 1944
graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and attended Vassar College.

He served in the US Navy during both World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Hill lived in Rowayton, Conn., from 1956-1972 when he moved to Franklin.

Before his retirement in 1991, he was employed at IBM in Poughkeepsie,
N.Y., US Polymetric in Stamford, Conn., Atlantic Laminates/Oak Laminates
and Polyclad Laminates in Franklin. He oversaw the installation of
plastic lamination facilities in California, Taiwan and Italy.

Mr. Hill was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1698
of Franklin, where he was actively involved in the recent renovations.
He was also involved with Franklin Lodge of Elks, BPOE, No. 1280.

In recent years, Mr. Hill was an active volunteer at the Twin Rivers
Intergenerational Center, where he was involved in the renovations and
the set up and maintenance of the center’s computer system.

He was a member of the Baptist Church of Franklin, where he served as
treasurer and was a former chairman of the board of trustees.

He formerly was a singer with the Gilbert & Sullivan companies in
Stamford, Conn., and Canterbury as well as with the Lakes Region
Chordsmen in Laconia.

Mr. Hill had a great love of the sea. In addition to serving in the
Navy, he was an avid fisherman and sailor. He also enjoyed many hobbies
including golf, tennis, gardening and being a private pilot. An avid
numismatist, he spent much time metal detecting.

A daughter, Judith A. Hill, predeceased him in 1983.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janet L. (Fenwick) Hill of
Franklin; two sons, Jonathan R. Hill of Franklin and David F. Hill of
North Woodstock; a daughter, Katherine L. Hill of New York City; two
grandsons, Jeffrey Hill of Franklin and Lorenzo Hill Moretti of New York
City.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Baptist
Church of Franklin, Church Street, Franklin, with the Rev. Scott Fetter,
pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Williams officiating. Fellowship and
refreshments will follow at the church. Spring burial will be in
Franklin Cemetery. H.L. Young & Company Memorial Home, 175 South Main
St., Franklin, is in charge of arrangements. Carlton C. Ham is the
funeral director.
