Elswood ‘Toby’ Hill
GILFORD — Elswood S. "Toby" Hill, 93, of 7 Coach Road, Gilford, died
March 21, 2001 at the Blue Flower Inn in Tilton.
Born Oct. 17, 1907 in Dumont, N.J., he was the son of the late James G.
and Ella (Smart) Hill. He graduated from Union College, Schenectady,
N.Y., with a B.S. in electrical engineering and from Cornell University,
Ithaca, N.Y., with an M.S. in education.
He was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a lieutenant
commander. He taught pre-flight school at Chapel Hill, N.C., during this
time.
He was a teacher of math for many years in the Brighton, N.Y., High
School, retiring as head of the math department.
He was a longtime resident of Rochester, N.Y., and had been a resident
of Gilford since 1986.
He was a member of the New York State Teachers Association.
Mr. Hill was an active member of the Gilford Community Church, where he
sang in the choir for many years and at the time of his death was on the
Social Action Committee.
He was also an avid sailor, spending many hours sailing on Lake
Winnipesaukee.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice R. (Ramsay) Hill of
Gilford; sons, Douglas P. Hill and Stevens R. Hill, both of Gilford;
grandchildren, J. Porter Hill, Ramsay T. Hill and Christopher C. Hill,
all of Gilford.
There are no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend memorial
services on Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m. in the Gilford Community
Church with Mrs. June Osgood, lay preacher, officiating. Burial will be
in the spring in the Raymond C. Wixson Memorial Garden, Gilford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Toby’s name to the Gilford
Community Church, 19 Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, NH 03249.
The Dewhirst Funeral Home, 1061 Union Ave., Laconia, is in charge of the
arrangements.
