Estella R. Colby

GILFORD — Estella R. (James) Colby, 91, of 50 Old Lakeshore Road,
Gilford, died Monday morning, Sept. 17, 2001, at her home.

Born July 30, 1910, in Gilford, she was the daughter of the late Howard
and Annie (Parker) James. She was educated in the Laconia school system
and was a graduate of the Concord Business School.

She had been employed in the outpatient department of Laconia Hospital
and later as a bookkeeper for R.H. Smith, now Head’s Electric.

After her retirement, she volunteered at the Lakes Region General
Hospital more than 25 years at the front desk until recently.

She was a lifelong resident of Gilford and an active member of the
Gilford Community Church, where she sang in the choir and served as
financial secretary for more than 30 years.

She was also a member of the Mary Butler Chapter, Daughters of the
American Revolution, a member of the Mt. Belknap Grange in Gilford, and
a member of the Pairs and Spares.

She loved to travel, having been to England, and took part in the annual
schooner sail held by the late Rev. Raymond C. Wixson on the Maine
seacoast, well into her 80s.

She is survived by a son, James D. Colby of Gilford; a daughter, Joanne
C. Clark of Gilford; grandchildren, Daniel W. Clark of Belmont,
Katharine Major of Cotuit, Mass., and Janet L. Colby of Gilford;
great-grandchildren, Jillian Stockwell, Keeley R. Major, and Riley
Major, all of Cotuit, Mass., Leland Clark, Litteera Clark, Jonna Clark
and Asher Clark, all of Belmont; a sister, Lois Morton of Ft. Myers,
Fla.; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. in Gilford
Community Church, Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, with the Rev. Donna Hankins
Hull, interim pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Raleigh Dutton,
former pastor of the church. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery, Laconia.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Piano Fund of the
Gilford Community Church, 15 Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, NH 03249.

The Dewhirst Funeral Home, 1061 Union Ave., Laconia, is in charge of
