SPRINGFIELD GIRL'S DEATH IS ATTRIBUTED TO ASPHYXIATION.

SPRINGFIELD,Vt., Nov. 19-Joanne Marie Courchaine, 11, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Courchaine of Springfield, Vt., died of
asphyxiation after swallowing a balloon yesterday, a medical examiner's
autopsy report revealed today.
The balloon became lodged in the girl's throat when she held it in her
month while using both hands to undo her kerchief at the Community
House. The panic-stricken girl ran down a hall and knocked on an office
door. She fell face down as the door was opened by Mrs. Ernest LaCross.
The tragedy happened after school yesterday when Joanne and a
schoolmate, Ardyce Washburn, 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard W.
Washburn, went downtown to attend a Girl Scout meeting. On their way
they stopped at the opening of a local store where each received a
balloon. Joanne was to have taken her tenderfoot badge test.
An emergency call brought Police Officer Donald Fullam and Dr. A. B.
Woodman. Resuscitation efforts failed, Dr. Robert Richards, assistant
medical examiner, gave permission for removal of the body.
Joanne was born here March 21, 1943, daughter of Harold and Elizabeth
(White) Courchaine. She was a sixth grade pupil.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church.
