CITY NATIVE DIES ABROAD.

Lady Hawkins Was Former Betty Sheldon of
Rutland (Vt) ; Relatives Live Here.

Word of the death recently in London, England of Lady Hawkins, the
former Betty Sheldon of this city, has been received by her brother,
L.P.
Sheldon of Pawlet, Vt., Lady Hawkins was the
widow of Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, famous author. Under the pen name of
Anthony Hope,
he wrote "The Prisoner of Zen---" ,"Dolly Dialogues" and other works.
Lady Hawkins was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles H. Sheldon whose family home was on Nichols street, the
residence later being converted into the present nurses' home. She was
born in this city and spent her early childhood here. She married
Anthony Hope Hawkins in London in 1903 and since that time has lived in
England. Hawkins was knighted by
King George V in 1918.
Lady Hawkins whose youngest son was killed
in World War 11, is survived by a son and a daughter. She was a cousin
of John S. Sheldon of Grove Street.
