Hi Beth,

I'm sorry I don't know. By all accounts it was 'done for' from what Stubby found and was ready to sell it off. So it would seem it's hayday was over.?So it could have been, any reason???:)

I was extremely lucky Stubby found the ship as I had not, and written so many maritime museums here in the states as well as england and Holland. No one heard of it!..Nobody until Stubby! I am so greatful for his find in time!

But anyway, do you have any more information on the ship or if additional records are kept more that the passengers list I already have?

Hi Stubby,

Good evening!

It's been awhile and since things are getting a little bit colder time to dig
into the ancestors again.

You had found information on the ship they had sailed on "the Jacob" 9 (below).
Since then I believe I have found Casper Ross and Gerrit Ross' parents in
Amsterdam but looking for any other documents to be sure. You know how it goes.

Can you tell me are there other?records from the ship available besides
passengers lists, that would help me to know a little more about this Casper
Ross? Something with his fathers name possibly? I have written Amsterdam and
from what I have learned there weren't any docs on people leaving the amsterdam?

I find that a little hard to believe though?

I would appreciate any information!

According to an old newspaper article I'm seeing, the ship Jacob was advertised
for sale or Charter on December 3, 1802 having just arrived from Amsterdam:

"She is a strong and faithful built ship, about 3 years old, burthen 227 tons
and fuppofed (supposed) to carry about 3500 barrels, is well fitted; and may be
fent (sent) to fea (sea) at a very fmall (small) expence. For terms, apply to
Wharton and Lewis."

Much the same article was also posted on November 24, 1802 (The Gazette of the

United States) stating it had just arrived from Amsterdam.

The only thing that's advertised about the ship's passengers are that they are

German Redemptioners, "a number of healthy Men, Women, Boys and Girls amongst
who are Farmers, Gardners, Millers, Bakers, Brewers, Shoemakers, Taylors and
Weavers, & etc"

Wharton and Lewis was located at 115 (113?) South Front Street, Pennsylvania.

These advertisements were also listed in the Philadelphia Gazette as well as
the Providence Gazette (RI), the Evening Post (NY)

It looks like, by all accounts, that your ship Jacob had a regular route to
Amsterdam during 1802. I'm seeing other ships that arrived from Amsterdam to
the NY area in 52 days but I guess the total time there and back would be
depending on the load carried and the speed of the ship, weather conditions,
etc.

Hi Arline!
Thank you for the response!
Yes, I have seen that record in Ancestry.com. I was hoping some of the ship
"affecianados" might know of additional records such as maybe a captains log or
if anyone would know of somekind of departure record that would exist from
Amsterdam or who might hold such a record?

I have some records in Germany that look promising if I could find out just a
little more on the two individuals you see? Mainly birth, age of the two or even

a record that shows the parents?

The Jacob seems mystical, don't know much about her or who made the ship,
everyone so far I have contacted can't find any information about her.

Any help would be appreciated!

The ship Jacob is listed in "Pennsylvania German Pioneers". It arrived
from Amsterdam to Philadelphia 15 Nov 1802, Capt. John Moore,
consigned to Wharton P. Lewis. There were 161 passengers.
Your two passengers are listed as Casper Ross and Gerret Ross.
It does not mention the date the ship left Amsterdam.
