Good Morning Tim, members of the Board and fellow Volunteers,
May be I am really dense but I really feel after checking and reading
many articles and texts on the subject, although I am not an attorney, we as
a "group" should be applying for a "Collective Service Mark" If anyone is
interested (and we need to be) they may check this out for themselves but
according to NOLO at:
http://www.nolo.com/encyclopedia/articles/tc/PCT26.HTML
A "COLLECTIVE MARK" is a symbol, label, word, phrase or other mark used by
members of a group or organization to identify goods, members, products or
services they render. Collective marks are often used to show membership in
a union, association or other organization.
The use of a collective mark is restricted to members of the group or
organization that owns the mark. Even the group itself -- as opposed to its
members -- cannot use the collective mark on any goods it produces. If the
group wants to identify its product or service, it must use its own
trademark or service mark.
This type of Service Mark will protect each and everyone of us. In plain
words what I spend hours typing or as in the case of yesterday dollars
purchasing census films to transcribe will be protected from being taken
from me by the "Project" as a group, It will insure that My information
remains with my site
A Service Mark is basically an Identifying Mark, which we already have,
the USGenWeb Project Logo. This identifies who we are. A Collective Mark
Identifies our sites as part of the USGenWeb Project and protects the
services we provide.
Please take the time to go to this url and learn the definitions of the
various marks.

The is VERY important to each of us, because we are volunteering hours and
dollars and need the proper protection. Don't stick your head into the sand
and think some one else knows what is best for you! Inform yourself and then
decide if you want to our Board to make this decision on their own without
your consideration. I am not trying to cause a problem, the problem is here
and we need the best for ALL of us
We do not need an attorney to file and collect $75.00 per hour. I am sure
you, meaning the Board will be able to fill out the simple form and mail it
into the PTO.
I am concerned about this and hope that "we" as a Project will do the best
for all of the Members, I am very hesitant to send money for this until
everyone has an opportunity to voice opinions and have thorough discussion.
And I don't want to pay for an attorney.
Kathy
