Cyndie,

I strongly suspect that correcting a large group of the errors in the error
log is what's improved the performance of the National site. We'll probably
never get rid of all of the errors that are generated, but trimming them
down to manageable levels definitely cuts down on how much the server's tied
up and not reacting as well as it could to visitors as they come in to view
our pages.

Like Scott, I've not personally experienced any problems with the National
site, either before the issue came up, or since. I don't have anything to
judge against. Are we still getting reports from researchers that the
problems are continuing?

No matter where the National pages are hosted, if there are hundreds or
thousands of errors being generated, the performance will be affected by the
errors being generated. One thing that we need to also remember is that
errors aren't all generated by the coding on the pages on our site. If
another site links to ours and is looking for a file that is no longer
there, an error will also be generated there. These are the errors we have
very little control over, with the exception of periodically checking the
logs and contacting the webmaster of the referring site and giving them the
updated link/file if there is one.

The performance has been acceptable the past couple of weeks, but I don't
know if there was a permanent resolution to be able to conclude that it is
resolved for the long term.

I understood, Cyndie, but since I've never been able to experience the
problem, I wasn't sure if it was resolved or not.

I'm trying to determine whether it's a continuing problem or not. I just
can't tell from my end and haven't heard anything more from anyone as to
whether it was still a problem.

Scott
