ANNOUNCEMENTS
===================================================
LFHC CLOSED FOR HOLIDAYS - The Logan Utah Regional Family History Center
will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday July 24th, 25th, and 26th
for the Pioneer Holidays.
NEW RESEARCH TOOL - The Church announced a new tool for researching
African American and other U.S. Family Members. It is titled "Finding
Records of Your Ancestors, Part A: African American, 1870 to Present".
Cost is $5.25. We have ordered copies. This will be a great help to
African Americans searching for their ancestors, but because it focuses
on post-slavery records, it will also be useful to those researching any
U.S. family.

PATRON QUESTIONS/ANSWERS
===================================================
QUESTION: I have resurrected my Legacy genealogy program and have
ordered the update. I was told a new version will be mailed in about
two months. Legacy is really more powerful than PAF and it was fun to
"play" with it again. I might be very interested in some classes on the
program. If you are planning some, please let us know in the weekly
newsletter.
ANSWER: In lieu of Legacy classes, we hold a Legacy Users Group meeting
the 1st Wednesday of each month (except July & Aug). We cover whatever
topics anyone in the group requests in advance. We leave plenty of time
for spur of the moment questions as well. Our next meeting will be Sep
3 at 7:30 p.m. in the classroom at the Family History Center. If you
have any topics you'd like to see covered, just drop me an email at
. Hope to have you join us.

MORE PAF UTILITIES - In answer to the patron's question of July 9 about
software to clean up PAF
files, here is another one.
"World Place Advisor" by Progeny Software contains OVER 3.3 MILLION
place names from around the WORLD, including US Churches and
Cemeteries, and can quickly check your genealogy file for place name
accuracy and completeness. It will list all incomplete place names and
fill in the missing blanks, especially helpful for finding county names.
It can automatically check all the place names in your genealogy
database and red-flag incorrect spelling's or
incomplete place names. From here you will be able to cut and paste
corrections directly into your database. It can identify all data
errors by pinpointing names that are ambiguous, listed with the wrong
county or other geographic jurisdiction, unknown, nonspecific, missing
commas, and/or missing altogether. It provides latitude and longitude
reference points for 100,000 US Churches and Cemeteries. The unique
Geo-Tree view will show you every ancestor that lived in or around any
particular location you choose.
World Place Advisor will read your genealogy file directly (no
GEDCOM exports required)! For more information and to see what World
Place Advisor can do for you, go to:

Sounds good, but we are still trying to decide if our FHC has money
to purchase it. ---Doris
STAY AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER - The tip from Susan Hopkins about printing
small versions of an image to read them more clearly reminds me of an
observation I've made numerous times while trying to read words in
computer-scanned (bit-map) images. The eye-brain connection is a
curious beast. When blowing up images to fill the computer screen,
individual pixels at the highest magnification are naturally "boxy"
which attracts the brain's attention, making identifying letters harder.
However, standing back from the computer screen 10-20 feet removes the
"boxiness" impression and can sometimes make the words almost magically
appear. ---Christopher M. Gould, "Ancestry Daily News", Copyright C

GET AS MANY SOURCES AS POSSIBLE --- Several years ago, when I was doing
my research the "old-fashioned way," I found a individual who had died
without close family. She went or was put into a home before her death.
Being of "clear" mind she wanted to make sure that her death information
was correct and so she filled out forms with all the information
included. When she died, her death certificate showed the informant as
herself. Her obituary was written by someone (a friend) in the home
using the information she had left behind and adding how much everyone
liked her.
Another interesting tip regards me being born to a 17-year-old in a
home for unwed mothers, who had to give me up. Some years back, I found
her and asked, "Where was I born?" She told me about the "home" and
agreed to get my original birth certificate for me, which is allowed in
the State of Washington. Here, the birth mother can request a
certificate but the child cannot. When the certificate arrived, she
forwarded it to me with comments about "them" getting her middle name
wrong and there being no information about the father, which she had
given. However, when I looked it over, I saw that I was listed as a
stillborn. She had not even noticed this, but I can assure you that it
was my birth certificate, same numbers as my altered one, and that I am
still alive. I urge people doing genealogy to always have an open mind,
to never jump to conclusions, and to get as many sources as
possible.---Cindi, "Ancestry Daily News", Copyright C 1998-2003,
