=The National Road was the first road built & PAID FOR by the Federal Government. Congress debated a long time over building it. The South wanted it from Atlanta, Georgia to New Orleans, and the North wanted it from Baltimore to St. Louis. It was not completed to St. Louis. Building across western Maryland and present day West Virginia was a massive job. Crossing the Ohio River was also most difficult. It took many =hours= and =days= and =months= and =years= to complete to Vandalia, Illinois. The Indiana portion was the last to be completed. I will use the Legacy Genealogy Program to show the progress of the road.=
