No James and Matilda Thompson listed in 1850 Census.

There is a James Thompson listed in 1860 Smyth County, Va, born in 1806 in
Scotland. He is unmarried and is working as a Stone Mason.

The 1870 Census shows only one James Thompson born in Scotland. He is a
soldier, age 35, stationed at Fort Monroe, Elizabeth City County, Virginia
