Dena,
Hi, I am Allen Cooke and yes, I am working on a book concerning this branch
of the Cary family. I am aware of the Edward Cary that you refer to, and it is
an easy thing to assume that he is a son of Edward Cary and Martha Stubbs.
This is because he was born at the right time and in the proximity of where
this family lived at the time. Old Rappahannock County did not exist in 1788
and the new current Rappahannock County was carved out of Culpeper County in
the early-mid 1800s, so there is a little confusion there. However, Francis
Stubbs Cary, a son of Edward Cary & Martha Stubbs moved to Washington, then in
Culpeper County, but later the seat of Rappahannock County by the early 1820s.
A number of his descendants lived there and a few still do today.
There is speculation on both sides of the issue. Martha Stubbs had a sister
who did move to Kentucky. Also Charles Mynn Thruston, a kinsman, moved from
Millwood, where Francis Stubbs Cary was born, to Kentucky and thence to
Louisiana in the early 1800s. However there is much documentation by a devoted
genealogist of the family, Robert Mackey Heterick, who only recorded their births
and nothing more. His personal letters contain much correspondence with
persons in Kentucky and Missouri, where Edward Cary migrated to, without mention
of Edward or another lost brother, Charles Mynn Cary. A sister of this
generation, Sarah Cary was blind and lived with her sister, Mary Reade Cary
Heterick until her death. Her will named all the known members of the family and did
not include anyone from a missing branch.
This is not to say that Edward born in 1788 is not of the family, but there
is nothing concrete to prove it. I have posted on Cary forums that any male
Cary descendants of this family should submit a DNA test. I have gotten DNA
test results from a male Cary from the 2 main branches, Edward Cary and Samuel
Cary, who were sons of John Cary and Mary Reade who lived in York
County,Virginia. They both match in the 37 marker test. If we can get a sample from a
male Cary in your line, then we can prove it. I would be very interested to
learn the results!
Sincerely,
Allen Cooke

Hello,
In the publication of "The Family Tree Searcher" - Vol 4, no.2 (Dec 2000),
of the Gloucester Genealogy Society, there was an article on John Reade
Cary. In the article it mentioned that Allen R. Cooke, along with several
others were working to publish a book on the Cary family., possibly in 2001. Has
this book been published? Is it available for purchase?
I would very much like to contact to contact Mr Cooke, or anyone else who
was involved with this project. I am a descendant of Edward Cary b: 1788, who
was the brother of Mary Reade Cary Heterick of Frederick Co., and Francis
Stubbs Cary of Rappahannock Co. Edward seems to be the missing link in this
family. He left Virginia, and went to Kentucky in the early 1800's. I am
willing to share my information on gr gr gr grandfather, Edward Cary and his
descendants.
