Do you have a list of the contents of the time capsule? If there is
anything of value, there might be an attempt to sell it to a pawn broker or
auction it on Ebay. Your standard vandal would not be looking for a time
capsule in a corner stone in a church. It sounds as if someone ran accross
it being mentioned in records/articles and thought it may hold artifacts for
their own collection or profit.

I am very sorry for our loss (the community).

I once found a small graveyard on the edges of the Hudson river, overlooking
New York City. The names and dates placed this family having lived there
during the Revolutionary War. This family watched (and maybe took part)
Colonials run up and down the Palisades while coordinating cannon attacks on
British ships of war. Maybe they even witnessed General Washington's
retreat to Morristown and the fall of New York City. I am sure they even
had to contend with occupation. I know they survived because dates also
placed them after our day of Independence. Anyway - I digress. My last
visit found the graveyard overgrown with weeds, beer bottles and garbage.
Many of the headstones were toppled over and broken. These were malitiously
handled. As I tried to clean a part of the graveyard but was ejected by
local park rangers. I tried to explain but they would not hear of it. I
thought that it was insane that here was a person (nicely dressed) that is
volunteering time to clean a historic place . . . doesn't make sense.

Regards,
Edward

On my annual trip to Preston County, WV I always visit Wotring Chapel near
Rowlesburg, WV. Up on top of the mountain, an old abandoned church my
ancestors attended. This year I found someone had pried the cornerstone out

of the church and removed the contents of the time capsule. Does anyone know

if this was done with the community or an malicious act by thieves.
