Article Title: The Sun

Article Date: March 12 1898

Article Description: Capt. Wm. W. BLOODGOOD Sacrifices His Life in Attempting to Rescue His Colored Cook.

Article Text:

Norfolk, Va., March 11.--Capt. Wm. S. BLOODGOOD, and William HARRIS, the latter the colored cook of the tug Edith BLOODGOOD, were drowned in the Albemarle and Chesapeake canal, near North Landing, this afternoon. HARRIS fell overboard, and Captain BLOODGOOD, knowing of the cook's inability to swim, plunged in after him. Captain BLOODGOOD succeeded in getting HARRIS to the canal bank, but the drowning man's struggles exhausted his would-be rescuer and both sank in shallow water. The bodies were recovered and taken to Portsmouth, where the families of the unfortunate men reside.
