Accolades to Charlotte Geier. She was correct to note that copywrite is automatic and more so to mail oneself a copy of the material. However, it is best advised to get the work "officially" published by a printing company and obtain a Library of Congress number. With todays technology, you can get as little as a single book published. Remember the Xerox commercial?
In the end, there are two issues you must determine. How far are you willing to protect your materiel and how far do you wish your materiel to be decimated.
Publishing online is like cleaning out your garage and placing it beside the road for anyone who wants to pick it up. It's hard to protect.
Donating books to libraries is more like leaving your belongings (lawnmower, birdbath, etc) in the open. It has limited protection.
Publication and sell by purchase (including price) of your materiel has the greater protection.
