John Burke, III, was continued in office as Treasurer of Mathews County, Va
for many years He also was United States Department of Agriculture
Commissioner of Fishing for the six Tidewater Counties from 1905 to 1920.
He was a fine gentleman and greatly respected by all Mathews County people.
The named Nancy Yeatman (Hudgins) (Barry) Burke married extremely both
times She inherited a great deal of land and slaves from John Berry in
Middlesex and her father gave her life-tenancy of "all my estate, both real
and personal in Middlesex County (Va)-to be divided arnongst her children
as she she shall see fit.
Now we go back to the descendants of Houlder Hudgins, I, and Mary Gwyn.
Mary Gwyn (1744-1793), second wife of Houlder I, was born 1744 on Gwyn
Island directly off-shore from Clifton Manor. She was the dau. of an old
friend of the original William Hudgins, Hugh Gwyn and Frances Peyton. The
name, Gwyn, appears frequently in the Kingston Parish Register and also on
the Muster Roll of the Virginia Militia.
Houlder Hudgins, I and Mary Gwyn were married May 8, 1774 and they had
three children, as listed:
John Lewis Hudgins, born 1779- died 1871
Thomas Hudgins, born 1788- died 1862.
Mary Gwyn Hudgins, born 1792.
The named John Lewis Hudgins.born (1775-1871) mentioned above married
twice: m - 1st in 1804 to Susan Anderson (1772-1818); m - 2ndly, Mary
Anderson (1775-1848). These two wives were sisters.
Susan and Mary Anderson were sisters. as well as daughters of Capt. Mathew
Anderson and wife Mary Dabney of Exchange Plantation in Gloomier Co., Va, A
third sister, Elizabeth Anderson (1774-1804) became the third wife of
Houlder Hudgins. I
.
John Lewis Hudgins and Susan Anderson had two children:
Albert Gwyn Hudgins 1305-1853) (see later); and Elliott Washingtort Hudgins
(1847-1867) (see later).
Albert Gwyn Hudgins (1805-1853) graduated from the Medical School at the
University of Maryland and became known throughout Tidewater Virginia as
"Dr A.G." and was a popular family doctor to the entire Hudgins family. In
1836 he married Rebecca Valentine Hudgins (1816-1860), his first cousin by
Col. Thomas Hudgins and his 2nd wife, Ann Valentine, and they had seven
children:
Albert Gallatin Hudgins, born 1840
Virginia Byrd Hudgins. born 1842, married Major Boonton Hill
Mattie Lee Hudgins (1845-1868)
Thomas Scott Hudgins, born 1849, died 1864 being killed during the Civil War
Ann Valentine Hudgins, born 1850-
James Campbell Hudgins, date of birth not given- died 1855
The above Elliott Washington Hudgins (1907-1867) was married in 1858 to
Lelia Augusta Worsham (1833-1869) at Mathews. The only known issue of this
marriage was a son, Elliot Worsham Hudgins who was born in Hampton, Va. in
1867 (who wrote me in 1943, at which time he was living in Blackstone, Va.)
He had a son Elliott Worsham Hudgins, Jr., born 1901, who lives in Kent,
Maryland and has a son Elliott Worsham Hudgins, III.
John Lewis Hudgins and wife Mary (Anderson) had only one child that
survived to maturity. Three other children died before reaching maturity.
One of these was nzmed Byrd Hudgins who was engaged to marry Maxwell
Summerville, a fine young man of Middlesex County, Va. She died in his arms
at their wedding. He was so well liked by her brother, Thomas Anderson,
that they became life-long friends. This story is told here because Thomas
Jefferson named hi son Maxwell after him and the name has survived in the
family over since. The son who survived was:
Thomas Jefferson Hudgins (1821-1915), who married Nancy Wright (1824-1911)
of Caroline County, Va., inherited Bellefield, the manor of his father,
John Lewis Hudgins. adjoining Clifton Manor and this couple had eight
children:
Maxwell, born 1857-
Burton Hudgins, horn 1859-
Alice Hudgins. born 1861 -died 1940 (known a.% "The White Violet")
Boutwell Hudgins, (birth data not given here nor death date)
Clarence Hudgins, (?-?)
Isobel Hudgins, (?-?)
Annie Todd Hudgins, born 1863 died l957
Franklin Hudgins, born 1875, died 1941.
Next to my own branch of the family, this is the line with which I am best
acquainted. I was raised with the sons of Maxwell Hudgins and spent most of
my scbool vacations at Bellefield Manor where I knew "Cousin Tom and Cousin
Nancy" very well. They were both deaf as were their daughters which made
them tolerant of the great noise created by the many children around the
house.
Annie and her sister Alice Hudgins never married They were dear people,
deeply religious and heavily involved in church affairs. Annie was the
closest friend my mother had in her early married life and had much to do
with raising me.
On the death of their father, Thomas Jefferson Hudgins, the two girls sold
Bellefield and moved away; Alice to Moultrie, Georgia to live with one of
the sons of Maxwell where she died in 1910. Annie Hudgins moved to
Richmond, Va. where she became the manager or the Civil War Veteran's
Widows Home, a Position she held for 21 years until her retirement at the
age of 80 when she entered the Baptist Home for Christian Women in
Nashville, Tenn. Annie died in the Fall of 1957 at the age of 94.
Maxwell Hudgins (born 1857-?) was a civil engineer of considerable note [He
graduated from Washington & Lee University and took his engineering degree
at Columbia University. He married Annie Webb Taylor of Norfolk, (Va) by
whom he had a daughter Mary Maxwell Hudgins. At the time of his death,
Maxwell Hudgins was Headmaster of Norfolk Academy. He was named after
Maxwell Summerville, referred to above, as the best friend of Thomas
Jefferson Hudgins. His brother, Burton, named one of his sons after him a
also.
(NOTE- The above data was cornpiled by Houlder Hudgins, IV in 1958 and was
passed on to Mr. Edward A. Hudgins, who wishes to continue with data and
wishes to receive any data and or corrections given herein. Write to Mr.
Edward A. Hudgins, 9417 Orleans Street, Norfolk, Va. 23503 or call Mr.
Hudgins on the telephone at the number 587-9023. There is more Hudgins and
related families to appear in this feature at a future date. -ed

HUDGINS
HUDGINS FAMILY OF MATHEWS COUNTY, VIRGINIA. This is additional information
on this Hudgins had been sent and wanted. Would like to know the parents of
my great-grandfather, William Thomas Hudgins, born January 18, 18077, death
unknown (although living with his son. Joel M. Hudgins, per the 1850 U.S.
Census for Mathews County, Virginia). The said William Thomas Hudgins
married Catherine F. Hudgins and he had three brothers and one sister,
namely: Robert, John, Lewis and Joeann. As stated in a previous data, there
was a family Bible with the children of William found, but no record of the
names of the parents of William Thomas Hudgins.
The additional Hudgins obtained was that of Joel ("Joe") M. Hudgins, born
Feb. 8, 1833 and died Aug, 4, 1903, who married Nancy Daisy Hudgins, she
being born July 31, l834 and died Oct. 12, 1921. To this marriage were born
the following children:
(1) Edward ("Cattee') B. Hudgins, born 1858 and died June 15, 1905 who
married Ellenora ("Nanie") 1. Cottee. These were the grandparents of Edward
A. Hudgins of Norfolk, Virginia, who has been the person most interested in
gathering the Hudgins data.
(2) Columbus ("Lurn") W. Hudgins, who married Willie White
(3) Resella Hudgins, who married Coley White.
(4) Mary Susan Hudgins, who married George F. Armistead.
With the data received from Mr. Edward A. Hudgins, 148 Tidal Road, Norfolk,
Virginia 23518,, was a newspaper without date shown thereon, which
apparently had been published at an earlier date covering a Hudgins house
with picture and caption, "1828 House Demolished - Held Five Generations"
and the statement under the picture read as follows: "This old.house at New
Point which was built in 1828, was occupied by five generations prior to
being demolished last month. It was built in 1828 for EIzay B. Hudgins and
his bride Susan Burroughs Hudgins, where they raised ten children. In the
1810's Capt. James Hudgins,,who married one of the former Hudgins children,
built the bedroom on the left, where they resided until they built another
house nearby. In 1905 the kitchen was built by George W. Forrest and Taylor
Owens for Thomas J. Hudgins, third generation, and his wife Tamazine. Their
children raised there, one of whom was Luther Hudgins who was of the fourth
generation to occupy the house with his wife Grace M. Their daughter
Gladys, fifth generation, resided at the house with her husband James Arms
for 21 years. Their granddaughter, Miss Vonnie Arms of Hartsville, Pa., of
the seventh generation, spent her first Christmas in the House. The
original building which contained one room on the first floor and two on
the second near, was razed in 1965 and the kitchen in March of this year."
The other attached data on the Hudgins given to this writer by the named

educated by their grandparents and did not come to Virginia and Gloucester
County (Kingston Parish), until 1765.

and his mother 27. The son of Houlder (3) Hudgins, Capt. Houlder (4)
Hudgins was born when his father was 39 years of age. He married a Miss
Porter of Delaware, her parents came from New England, and it is intersting
to know that after the war in 1865, Mrs. Hudgins utilized one side of
'Clifton Mansion' as a young ladies academy and a school with quite a
number of teachers for a period of 16 years and many present-day mothers in
Mathews Co., VA. were educated at 'Clifton Academy'. Mr. R. W. (5) Hudgins,
