Thanks Dave!

I believe that this GEORGE W DUNCAN that was married to ELVINA/ELVIRA
READ is the one I'm looking for.

I wonder why MARY ANN DOBSON has him listed as being born circa 1804 in
Virginia. It seems to me that he could have been born closer to 1810 from
the census records that I found:

The 1820 Amherst county Census has FLEMING H DUNCAN with many children.
Including 2 boys under the age of 10 and 1 between 10 and 16.
GEORGE W DUNCAN could have been 10 years old at the time.

NANCY BIBB
TANDY JONES
WM MORGAN

(GEORGE had 1 male 20-30 = GEORGE; 1 female 20-30 = ELVINA/ELVIRA)

October 27, 1829 - GEORGE W DUNCAN married ELVINA / ELVIRA READ (consent of
mother ELIZABETH READ). Witnesses: WM MITCHELL, A B DAVIES, RO C BIBB

-- WM MITCHELL was married to SALLY READ and I believe that SALLY had
FLEMING DUNCAN with her in 1850. It is interesting that my HAYDON family
married into the MITCHELL family as well. I have not yet fit this WILLIAM
and SALLY (READ) MITCHELL into my MITCHELL tree.
-- I don't know who A B DAVIES is
-- RO C BIBB is probably related to the NANCY BIBB living next door to
GEORGE.
-- I believe that TANDY JONES next door to NANCY BIBB was the husband of the
SOPHIA JONES that had ROBERT and ALBERT DUNCAN living with her in 1850.

March 2, 1814 - WILLIAM MITCHELL married SALLY READ in Nelson county,
Virginia.
It is possible that SALLY and ELVINA / ELVIRA were sisters and thus WILLIAM
was a brother-in-law that was a witness to the marriage of GEORGE W DUNCAN
and ELVINA/ELVIRA READ.

(GEORGE had 1 male < 5 = ROBERT?; 1 male 10-15 = ?; 1 male 20-30 = GEORGE; 1
female < 5 = HARRIET?; 2 females 5-10 = FRANCES? & ?; 1 female 20-30 =
ELVINA / ELVIRA)

Since GEORGE appears in the same category for both census records it implies
that he was 20 one census year and 30 the next census year. Although, I
have found that ages in the census records are frequently off, I still give
them some consideration.

The VERY interesting thing to note about the 1840 census is that the JESSE
HAYDEN living a few houses down from GEORGE is "my" JESSE HAYDON who was the
father of many children including GEORGE HAYDEN (who I believe is the GEORGE
HEADEN mentioned by Mary Ann Dobson in the 1841 Amherst deed) and MARY
HAYDEN who married GEORGE W DUNCAN in Bedford county in 1851. MARY was
living at home with her father, JESSE, during the 1840 census and she was 28
years old.

The NANCY BIBB that lived next door to GEORGE DUNCAN in 1830 may have been a
relative of GEORGE. As the BIBB's and DUNCAN's were marrying into each
other's families.
November 5, 1821 - JOHN DUNCAN married RACHEL BIBB in Amherst county,
Virginia
(Is this the JNO. R. DUNCAN that Mary Ann Dobson found in the administration
of FLEMING H DUNCAN's estate? Perhaps JOHN was a brother of GEORGE W?)

It is possible that the JONATHAN RUSSELL found by Mary Ann Dobson in the
1833 Amherst county deed was related to GEORGE W DUNCAN as well.
June 11, 1830 - JOHN RUSSELL married JANE H DUNCAN in Amherst county,
Virginia
(Could JANE H DUNCAN be a sister of GEORGE W DUNCAN?)

Taking a closer look at the DUNCAN children in the 1850 census reveals the
following:

1850 Amherst County,Virginia (Eastern District, October 8, 1850, pg 100A,
house 404, family 404)
SARAH MITCHELL 58 f 880 VA
WM MITCHELL 20 m farmer VA
FRANCES DUNCAN 18 f VA
ANN M MITCHELL 17 f VA
FLEMING DUNCAN 8 m VA

I believe that this SARAH MITCHELL was the wife of WILLIAM MITCHELL and that
she was SALLY READ when she married in 1814. She may have been a sister of
ELVINA/ELVIRA and thus an aunt to FRANCES & FLEMING DUNCAN.

1850 Amherst county, Virginia (Eastern District, October 22, 1850, pg 108 B,
house 520, family 520)
CLAIBORNE N TUCKER 42 m farmer VA
ELIZABETH 33 f VA
JOHN W 14 m VA
CHARLES 12 m VA
JAMES T 7 m VA
SARAH A 3 f VA
HARRIET DUNCAN 14 f VA

December 9, 1834 - CLAIBORNE N TUCKER married ELIZBETH M MITCHELL in Amherst
county, Virginia.
It is possible that ELIZABETH was the daughter of WILLIAM and SALLY (READ)
MITCHELL and thus would have been a first cousin to HARRIET DUNCAN.

February 27, 1815 - TANDY JONES married SALLY THURMOND in Amherst County,
VA.

The TANDY JONES that was a neighbor of GEORGE DUNCAN in 1830 had a lot of
girls in 1840.
1840 Amherst county Census
TANDY JONES 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 2 1 2 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0
(2 males 15-20; 1 male 50-60 = TANDY; 1 female <5; 2 females 5-10; 1 female
10-15; 2 females 15-20; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 40-50 = SALLY)

I believe that the SOPHIA JONES family in the 1850 census that had ROBERT
and ALBERT DUNCAN were the neighbors of GEORGE DUNCAN. I don't know if
SOPHIA and SALLY were the same person or if SOPHIA was a different wife of
TANDY.

1850 Amherst county, Virginia (Eastern District, October 30, 1850, pg 96B,
house 356, family 356)
(note: the middle initial of SOPHIA is marked out and re-written. It could
be E, L, or S)
SOPHIA S JONES 47 f 2500 VA
THOMAS A WAUGH 30 m farmer VA
LUCY F WAUGH 22 f VA
MARY S JONES 18 f VA
MARTHA H JONES 16 f VA (possibly named after the
MARTHA H TAREMAN in the household?)
ANNA JONES 14 f VA
MOSSELLA JONES 12 f VA
ROBERTA JONES 9 f VA
ROBERT DUNCAN 10 m VA
ALBERT DUNCAN 9 m VA
RO SNEAD 5 m VA
MEREWETHER WAUGH 1/12 m VA
MARTHA H TAREMAN 55 f VA

THOMAS WAUGH is the son-in-law of SOPHIA.
October 28, 1848 - THOMAS E WAUGH married LUCY T JONES in Amherst county, VA
The baby boy is probably their son.

I do not know who the SNEAD boy is. However, the soundex system equates
TAURMAN & TAREMAN to THURMOND. So perhaps MARTHA is a sister-in-law to
SOPHIA / SALLY?
April 25, 1836 - MARTHA SNEAD married WILLIAM TAURMAN in Greenbrier County,
Virginia.
The interesting thing to consider here is that it would tie the family to
Greenbrier county which is where the HAYDEN family goes in 1860 and MARY
(HAYDON) DUNCAN with them.

1850 Amherst county, Virginia (Eastern District, November 18, 1850, pg 138,
house 779, family 779)
SPOTSWOOD P WOODY 30 m overseer VA
JUDIETH WOODY 35 f VA
SALLY DUNCAN 6 f VA

September 29, 1846 - SPOTSWOOD H WOODY married JUDY L TAYLOR in Amherst
county, Virginia.

I haven't been able to deduce a relationship between SALLY DUNCAN and this
couple as of yet. But there are lots of marriages that connect the TAYLOR
family to families mentioned in the documents cited by Mary Ann Dobson)
Dec 4, 1783 - JEREMIAH TAYLOR married Mrs. ANN STOVEL in Amherst county,
Virginia (ANN was the daughter of ARCHELAUS and HANNAH MITCHELL who were the
grandparents of HARRIET ANN MITCHELL who married JARVIS HAYDON the brother
of the MARY HAYDON that married GEORGE DUNCAN).
January 23, 1804 - WILLIAM S SNEAD married HANNAH TAYLOR in Amherst county,
Virginia
August 3, 1804 - MOSES TAYLOR married POLLY PRYOR in Amherst county,
Virginia

The big question is WHERE is GEORGE W DUNCAN in 1850? If he is alive but
living somewhere else and then returns to marry MARY HAYDON in 1851 then why
are his children with neighbors and relatives in 1850?

The 1860 Greenbrier county census does not properly show the last names for
the household of AMBROSE HAYDEN (HAYDON). It appears that AMBROSE married
someone between 1850 and 1860, had a son named JOHN J circa 1853 and that
she died before the 1860 census (perhaps in child birth?) I have not been
able to track down what happened to JOHN J HAYDON. GEORGE W DUNCAN must
have died between 1855 and 1860 but I don't know where he died at.

1860 Greenbrier County, Virginia (Lewisburg, June 23, 1860, pg 252, house
384, family 321)
AMBROSE HAYDEN 53 m carpenter 255 VA
MARY 45 f VA (note:
she was MARY DUNCAN the sister of AMBROSE HAYDEN)
JOHN J 7 m VA
JESSE 5 m VA (note:
he was JESSE DUNCAN, son of MARY)
BETTIE READ 14 f VA (was she
related to the first wife of GEORGE W DUNCAN? or a step daughter of
AMBROSE?)
JOHN FISHER 20 m VA
FRANK EDEN 25 m VA
JAMES HUNLEY 20 m VA
JOHN DUFFEY 60 m laborer Ireland
PAT DOLAN 28 m laborer Ireland
THOMAS CAINE 45 m laborer Ireland
JOHN GILBERT 55 m carpenter VA
FLEMg DUNCAN 17 m teamster VA (note: probably the
stepson of MARY DUNCAN)

I think there are too many "coincidences" for this not to be the same DUNCAN
family. Too bad most death records weren't kept by Virginia courthouses
until 1853.

I went to Greenbrier county last week while my children were on Spring
Break. I had hoped to learn more about the HAYDON and DUNCAN families while
they were in Greenbrier county but I didn't find very much at all.

I don't know what to make of the GEORGE W DUNCAN in Talladega county,
Alabama in 1850. It is odd that he is about the right age, born in
Virginia, and was a carpenter (like 2 of the brothers of MARY HAYDON). But
the military records request seems to tie him to a different DUNCAN family.
So where is "my" GEORGE W DUNCAN in 1850? And did his first wife
ELVINA/ELVIRA READ have a brother who may have died and left a widow that
could have married AMBROSE HAYDON after 1850?

I always seem to have more questions than answers!

Thanks again for this terrific information that you provided!
Debbie
