CAPTAIN ROBERT W. SAUNDERS

Captain Robert W. Saunders, born June 8, 1828 in Bedford Co., VA was of
English descent. He died Oct. 20, 1904. He located in the Forest Hill
District early in his life. He raised three children by his first wife,
Lina Miller: Lewis, Rebecca and Mable. All are dead, dying from diptheria
during trhe war. With his second wife, Sarah E. Meadows, daughter of Robert
Meadows, he raised the following children: Edward Lee, Josephine, who
married A. A. McCowell, A. H. and C. E. Saunders. The Meadows lived near
the old church on Greenbrier River. His third wife was Sallie A. harvey, a
daughter of Allen L. Harvey. Robert W. Saunders was a Captain during the
Civil War in the Confederate service. His sons are prominent farmers of
this community. Captain Saunders was a man of property and one of the
founders of the county. He owned the first saw mill in the community. This
was purchased about 1890.
