Hi, everyone--
My name is Tim Dennee, and I am the new administrator of this list. I
just wanted to introduce myself. Since I am here in Alexandria, I am
willing to do a limited number of look-ups, time permitting. The city
has a relative embarrassment of riches; there is great local interest in
the town's history, and many historical records have been published.
I am also a member of the board of the Friends of the Freedmen's
Cemetery, an organization dedicated to the preservation and commemoration
of the 1864-1868 Alexandria burying ground for recently freed African
Americans. The names of those buried in the cemetery are known and have
been published. I would be happy to do look-ups of these too. We are in
the process of creating a database of African Americans resident in
Alexandria during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
Incidentally, for those of you who are in the Alexandria area, we are
having a brief candle lighting ceremony to commemorate the deceased at
the cemetery and mark the end of an archaeological investigation there
which unearthed evidence of a number of graves. The event takes place at
10 a.m. on Thursday, November 11 at the corner of Church and South
Columbus Streets in Old Town Alexandria (behind the Mobil gas station at
1001 S. Washington).
