Several people have joined the VACALEXA list in recent months, so I think
it might be a good opportunity to do another roll call. For those who
are not familiar with the term, a roll call is simply a chance for
everyone to post to the list their interests--the individuals or surnames
they are looking for, as broad or as detailed as they wish to make it.
It would also be useful to know what resources relevant to
Alexandria--histories, directories, old maps, primary sources--list
members can make available to others through look-ups.
Finally, I'd like to get some idea of how many people on the list reside
near Alexandria.
As my own contribution, the books I have at home include:
F.L. Brockett, "The Lodge of Washington. A History of the Alexandria
Washington Lodge, No. 22, A.F. and A.M. of Alexandria, Va., 1783-1876,"
(Alexandria: George E. French, 1876)
T. Michael Miller, "Pen Portraits of Alexandria, Virginia, 1739-1900,"
(Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1987)
Lloyd House Staff, "Obituary Notices from the Alexandria Gazette,
1784-1915," (Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1987)
Wesley E. Pippenger, "Alexandria, Virginia Death Records, 1863-1868 and
1869-1896," (Westminster, MD: Family Line Publications, 1995)
Quartermaster General's Office, "Roll of Honor: Names of Soldiers,
Victims of the Rebellion, Buried in the National Cemetery at Alexandria,
Virginia," (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1866)
Patrick G. Wardell, "Virginians and West Virginians, 1607-1870," Vol. 3,
(Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1992)
Marjorie D. Tallichet, "Alexandria City Directory, 1791," (Bowie, MD:
Heritage Books, Inc., 1986)
Nan Netherton, et al., "Fairfax County, Virginia: A History," (Fairfax:
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, 1978)
Nan and Ross Netherton, "Arlington County in Virginia: A Pictorial
History," (Norfolk: The Donning Company, 1987)
I can also do some quick look-ups of other publications on my frequent
visits to the Alexandria Library, but requests have to be very limited in
scope and number. I haven't much time for original primary research as,
frankly, it takes away from my income-producing research.
