In the Alexandria Gazette on 30 March 1818 my ancestor is named in an
announcement:

"Dramatic Olio - For the benefit of Mr. Legg - On Monday Evening, March
30, will be presented, at the school-room formerly occupied by Mrs.
Payton, in Columbus street - A divertisement, consisting of songs,
glees, duets and recitations." It then goes on to give the details of
the program. Then "Tickets, one dollar each, to be had at R. Gray's
bookstore, and at the room. To commence at 7 o'clock precisely."

The next year, on 3 Apr 1819, a similar announcement:

"Theatre - Mr. & Mrs. Legg's Night - On which occasion Mr. Raymond of
Alexandria, has volunteered for the part of King Richard...Mr.
Caldwell's Benefit on Monday - Further particulars in bills."

Does anyone know the context of these events? Am I to assume that Mr.
Legg had some position of stature, or was it just community theater? Eli
Legg had a tavern in Alexandria, but no other prominence that I know of.

Thank you,

Lisa Deason
