Henry Darnell manumitted his children, Mary (22 years old), Charles (20),
Priscilla (18), and Henry (16), by deed recorded November 29, 1828 in
Alexandria Deed Book R-2, page 149. Darnell also manumitted Jane Grayson
(35), by deed recorded June 28, 1831. Darnell had apparently purchased
her freedom from Mary W. Butts for $250 on March 5, 1831 (Alexandria Deed
Book T-2, page 4 and S-2, page 534).

Henry Darnell is mentioned as receiving a $2 payment as grave digger for
Bridget Jackson on May 15, 1835 in The Library of Virginia, Arlington
County Records, Orphans' Court Account Books, Book 7 (1830-1839), page
211.

"Harry" Darnell was apparently a Sunday school teacher at Roberts
Memorial Chapel (606 South Washington Street). See Terry C. Miller "The
Underground Railroad in Alexandria, Virginia," (Alexandria: Alexandria
Archaeology, June 7, 2001), page 96.
