Greetings Charlotte County researchers,

Do you know anything about Samuel and/or Thomas C. Spain?

Several days ago a gentleman called our office, saying he
had two government-issued headstones for Civil War veterans
in his basement, which have been there since he bought the
house (over thirty years ago), but which he now needs to
dispose of, since he's moving. He wanted to know where
these two veterans were buried, to see if their graves were
marked or not. If they are not marked, he wants to put the
headstones where they rightfully belong.

The headstones' inscriptions are as follows:

SAMUEL SPAIN
CO I 56 REG VA INF CSA

THOMAS C SPAIN
CO I 56 REG VA INF CSA

According to the little research I have done, both men came
from Charlotte County, and both survived the War, living in
the Roanoke District of Charlotte as late as 1870. Perhaps
there is a Spain family cemetery somewhere near their
residence(?).

If you have any idea where these two men might be buried, or
who any of their descendants are, please let me know, and I
will pass the information along. This gentleman needs to be
completely moved out of his house by December 20, so he
would like to know what to do as soon as possible.

Many thanks in advance,

Ted
