Greetings all,
Thank you for the good information on the Spain family and
for your interest in finding their graveyard. I have no
doubt we'll find it, and if necessary, install the veterans'
headstones.
In case anyone is working on the Spain family genealogy, I
thought I would pass along my research so far:
Samuel Spain (1820-1904) was the father of Thomas C. Spain
(born 1843).
Samuel Spain's last wife was Mary A. Spain (1823-1907).
According to undertaker's records, both were buried in the
Spain family cemetery in Charlotte County (via train to
Pamplin). Attached is a copy of Samuel Spain's obituary
from the Lynchburg News (15 April 1904).
Thomas C. Spain (born 1843) seems to have died between
October 1904 and early 1907, since his wife is listed as the
"widow" of "Thos." C. Spain in the 1907 Lynchburg City
Directory. I can't find him in any of the major cemeteries
in Lynchburg, so my guess is that he was also taken to
Charlotte for burial.
Thomas C. Spain has a few immediate family members buried in
Presbyterian Cemetery (Lynchburg):
NAME RELATION DATE OF DEATH
===================================================
Nina Lee Spain daughter 6 October 1904
Susan W. Spain wife 4 February 1905
Thomas Beverly Spain son? 18 March 1954
[and perhaps others]
Hope this helps someone...
Ted
