Karen and Tony,
The Samuel Johnston who owned land on Turkey Cock and Leatherwood in Henry County is not the same man that owned the property on Ward's Fork, although I'm sure they're related. My Samuel, married to Elizabeth Ballenger, was born abt 1753. The Samuel Johnson of Ward's Fork was probably the man who died in 1790 in Charlotte. On 6 Mar 1799 Caleb Johnston, David and Jeane Bailey, James and Patsy Johnston, "all children of Samuel Johnston", were plaintiffs in a suit in Charlotte against William Johnston, Samuel Johnston, and Holcombe and Ruth Robertson. None of the defendents resided in VA.
Also, I believe that the John Ballenger who married Syntha Lester most probably came from the Ballengers of Frederick or Fairfax Counties. Joseph Ballenger, to my knowledge, had no brother named John. His parents Joseph and Charity Wade Ballenger had children: Abigail, Susannah, Richard, Elizabeth (married Nathan Bond), Mary (married Pearce Wade), Charity (married Jeremiah Wade), and Joseph (married Sarah Hensley Franklin) - at least these were the children named in his will, signed in Goochland Co, VA in 1744. Of course, John could have been disinherited. It certainly wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong, and no doubt won't be the last! In 1771 there was supposed to be a John Ballenger who owned land adjoining Joseph in Amherst County.
Elizabeth Ballenger Johnston had sisters Mildred Thornton Ballenger (married John Martin White; Margaret ("Peggy") Hensley Ballenger (married John H. Gravely), Charity Cox Ballenger (married Reuben Tarrant), and Phoebe (married Robert Tucker.
The creek presently named Turkey Cock flows north along on the western side of Pittsylvania, very near the Henry and Franklin lines. In fact it's headwaters are in Henry, and no doubt many small branches "on the waters of Turkey Cock" lie in Henry.
Nancy
