One of my relatives, James L. Bowen (1827-1905), a blind mattress maker,
donated 1/3 of his farm to his wife, Margaret, and the remaining 2/3rd's
to the Virginia School for the Deaf & Blind in August 1896. Margaret
donated her 1/3 share to the Virginia School for the Deaf & Blind in
November of that year. The land in question is where the present-day
farm of Joseph Joyce is located on Route 621 in Craig County. James L.
Bowen is buried in the cemetery above the Joyce home, as is his father,
also James. Does anyone have any information about the Virginia School
for the Deaf & Blind? Do any photographs exist? Also, does anyone know
where the original WPA histories of Craig County homes are located? I
have copies, which refer to photographs having been taken, but I have
not seen the photos. The Bowen log house (built about 1815 by my 5th
g-grandfather John Bowen, and at the time of the survey known as the
Wiley Francisco home) was one of those described in the WPA survey (late
1930's).
